This year we are investing over $20,000 to improve the trail surface for visitors with wheelchairs and strollers!
We are going to have hot beverages and snacks at The RISE this year! We're working with five Long Island caterers to bring you some great treats while you walk the trail!
Why didn't we have food and drinks in 2012?
We were asked a lot "How come you didn't sell any food or drinks last year? How hard is it to make a cup of hot chocolate?" There's a very simple answer. It's easy to make a cup of hot chocolate, of course! But what we found is it was really, really, really hard to make 5,000 cups in the middle of a field without any running water or electricity and it's especially hard when you're focused on making sure you have 5,000 jack o'lanterns carved and lit each night! This year were taking a different approach! We're bringing in some of the best caterers on Long Island who have experience serving so many people in a short amount of time! So grab a drink and a snack and we'll see you on the trail!
This year we are going to have 200 hanging lanterns and 75 additional flood lights to light the trail up!
This year we are spending over $30,000 just on parking staff and lighting for the parking area! Even though it's costing a lot, we are still going to offering free parking!
This year we are working with the Village of Old Westbury to allow exiting traffic to be able to make a left out of the back gate so it's easier to get to the L.I.E.! By the way, make sure you set your GPS to 71 Old Westbury Road, Old Westbury, NY and not to 60 Post Road (that's the service entrance and the way traffic exits the Gardens).
This year we are putting a number of generators in strategic places. If the power goes out in the area, The RISE will still have power!
This year were adding a second barcode to each ticket which will allow us to check in all of the tickets in your order with a single scan! By not having to scan each and every ticket, we'll be able to get everyone in much faster!
We are making some massive improvements to the Ghostwalk this year! First off, we're going to be laying down material on the ground to make the service level and smooth. This will be a big benefit for wheelchairs and strollers. We're also widening the Ghostwalk, adding additional staff, and putting in less pumpkins. This will make the Ghostwalk much smoother!
Last year we were open for 4 weekends and 11 nights. This year we are opening 5 weekends and 17 nights! We are also keeping the trail open and extra hour on Friday and Saturday for all you night owls (or night bats, we suppose!) A lot of people asked us if we could open up on some week nights. This year were going to open up on two Thursdays! Like the earlier times? This year the last Sunday of The RISE will be the day we set the clocks back an hour so well be able to open an hour earlier at 5:30! If you have young kids and want them to get home early, that might be a good time to go.
Our goal is to make The RISE the best possible Halloween experience for your family each year. One of the ways we can ensure that is to limit the possibility of overcrowding on the trail. This year were cutting the number of tickets we sell per timeslot so we keep the experience as intimate as possible!
We had a lot of people last year who realized they needed an additional ticket or two for friends after the timeslot they had tickets for sold out. For trail safety, we weren't able to sell more tickets than what we had and we can't this year either. So what we're doing this year is reserving about 20 tickets for each timeslot and only making them available for sale to customers who already have tickets for that particular timeslot. This way if you buy your tickets and later realize you need an additional ticket or two, you may be able to get them. These reserve tickets are a few dollars more than the general admission tickets and they may all be purchased by other people who have tickets for your timeslot, so it's a good idea to try to get however many tickets you'll end up needing when you first buy your tickets.
This year we are adding more tickets into our system which can be purchased at a discounted price. There are three ways to obtain these discounts. You can submit your email address and get a promo code emailed to you, click on Today's Deals, or become a new member of Old Westbury Gardens and get a premium reserved ticket to The RISE for only $15 (you save $11!).
Did you know that we built our entire online ticketing system in house from scratch? We have 2 really smart programmers who work in house year round on it. So far we put in over 6,200 hours into our system!
We received plenty of suggestions for new themes during the winter. You can see all of the new themes for 2013 in the list above! If you'd like to suggest a theme for next year, please contact us!
Last year we had about 60 intricately carved jack o'lanterns. Each one took from 16-24 hours to produce which included the time to hand-paint the image on and hand-carve it out! This year we're more than doubling the number of intricates!
This year we are going to be experimenting with carving Jack O'Lanterns that are almost 3 feet tall! Each one will take our artists an enormous amount of time to put the image on then carve them (well up to 30 hours), but hey it's worth it! Who doesn't like a big mamajamma jack olantern? Go big or go home, am I right?
This year we built a 10 foot tall and 22 foot wide structure that's going to hold about 200 jack O'Lanterns. We have a few more bigger displays in mind too!
This year were going to have 25 songs playing along our trail! Each song was specifically picked to be relevant to the theme they go along with!
One of the carvers from this year's Halloween Wars on Food Network will be on hand for a few nights at The RISE this year doing live carving demos! We're also bringing back Long Island's own Andy Gertler, star of Travel Channel's Sand Masters!
Three of our part time staff members from last year's RISE were hired on full time this winter to help us design our displays! Everyone who comes to The RISE helps a few really talented artists obtain full-time year-round art jobs!
If you came for opening weekend last year, you had to walk really far to get to the bathrooms. We brought in additional rest rooms after that. This year we're bringing in even more! We wouldn't have brought this up, but a lot of people asked us to!
This year we spent a lot of time designing the sets and stands that our Jack O'Lanterns reside on. It's going to be a lot cooler than last year! You'll see…
This year we're doubling our customer service staff! If you have any questions, the best way to reach us is by using the Contact Us link at the top of this page. This will send us an email. We usually respond to each email within a few hours at the most!
This year we're bringing in even more staff each night to help make your experience the best it can be!
This year we are working hard to partner with organizations to help bring value to them. We're working with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA's, and other organizations. If you belong to an organization with over 1,000 people and you'd like to fundraise by selling tickets to The RISE, please contact us for more information.
Come see over 5,000 hand-carved Jack O'Lanterns light up the night at one of Long Island's most treasured historic mansions, Old Westbury Gardens! RISE of the Jack O'Lanterns features the work of dozens of local artists and sculptors in a unique walk-through experience that's suitable for visitors of all ages. Our trail takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to walk through!

Went with my grandchildren to the rise and had such a wonderful experience. To see their expressions was priceless! Thank you! Coqui Bruni
Went last night in the rain. It was worth every penney. Totally AWESOME show. Hope you're back next year.!!!Loved every minute of it. Thank you so much!! Dolores Sudlow
This was a fantastic event that went quite smoothly with 4 kids and a "little munchkin". Staff was kind and extremely friendly. The art work was AMAZING and beyond. Wish I could carve like that. Each section was organized properly and created a great vibe. All the exhibits were perfect but my favorite had to be the ghost walk. Just walking under the nature path, bare trees, perfect lighting, good music set the ambiance just right. It was eery but just mild enough to make this scaredy cat not walk on eggs shells. Vicky Kanakis-Garcia
<< The Ghostwalk is one of our favorite features at The RISE!
We had a great time! Would definitely do it again next year! Kimberly Eager Gannon

Loved it! Was totally worth keeping the kids up late on a school night! We'll be back next year for sure! Teresa LaSpina McCarthy
Excellent job, especially for your first year. It totally puts me in the spirit of the holiday. There was so much to see, amazing! I will plan extra sleep and good walking shoes.I want tomake sure I see every pumpkin, individually, next time. Lisa Smith

<< We had two marriage proposals last year!
(They both said YES!)>>
Just wanted to say that we went last night and it was awesome! The pumpkins were absolutely amazing and the Westbury gardens were beautiful......the perfect place to have it. No complaints at all:) Amy Tilton
Hey guys, you put in a lot of hard work and it showed. Some really beautiful works of art there, fun music, nicely arranged with the already-existing landscaping. Colleen Eren
We were at the 9pm slot on Sat night and had an AWESOME time! No line, close, easy parking, and staff everywhere who tried to keep the crowd moving and even said you could move around and didn't have to bunch up ...Neither of us had ever seen this before and were amazed! We both especially LOVED the Ghost Walk, which had a bottle neck and maybe a 5 minute wait to get onto that path but worth every minute! ALL staff that we encountered were polite, helpful and courteous. Even leaving the event one of the parking lot guys went out of his way to get us out fast and easy! Too bad it;s sold out or we'd probably go again! Thanks! Rita Weigand
